Elasto Painters halt Gin Kings' 5-game romp
Rain or Shine 'balik-import' Duke Crews dropped 28 points in the Elasto Painters win over Barangay Ginebra.
Rain or Shine banked on the late-game heroics of Jericho Cruz to pull off a 118-112 come-from-behind win over the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings Friday night in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
With the Elasto Painters protecting a slim 112-111 lead with under a minute remaining, Cruz picked the pocket of import Justin Brownlee clean at the top of the key for the breakaway layup that gave RoS a three-point cushion with 32 seconds remaining before sealing the contest with a pair of charities.
The Elasto Painters improved their record to 5-4.
'Balik-import' Duke Crews, who replaced Shawn Taggart last week, debuted with 28 points and pulled down 22 rebounds while Cruz nailed 11 of his 19 markers in the payoff period for RoS, which trailed by as much as 77-93 late in the third quarter.
“I think the problem we had at the start of the game was we complained too much and we lost focus,” said Elasto Painters coach Caloy Garcia.
With Cruz and Jay Washington leading the way in the final 12 minutes, RoS made a telling run to take a 109-101 lead before Ginebra countered with a 10-0 blitz capped by a trey by Brownlee for a two-point lead with less than two minutes remaining.
Three free throws by Washington put the Elasto Painters back on top, 112-111, before Cruz’s decisive play.
The Gin Kings threatened for the last time, 115-112, after a split by Scottie Thompson with 20 ticks remaining. Washington had a slit on the line before Cruz sealed the game with two charities with seven seconds remaining.
Ginebra, which came off an 11-day layoff, saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the Gin Kings dropped to 5-2.
Brownlee had 38 points while Joe Devance finished with 19 for Ginebra. Japeth Aguilar had 15 while Thompson closed his night with 10.
