Kiamco, 3 more Pinoys in World 9-Ball Championship Last 64
Warren Kiamco (left) slipped past his last match in the group stage to set up an all-Filipino match in the Last 64 against Raymund Faraon.
Four more Filipinos booked tickets to the WPA World 9-Ball Championship Last 64 on Tuesday at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
Warren Kiamco, Lee Van Corteza, Oliver Medenilla and Johan Gonzales took the last bus ride to the knockout stage to join compatriots Dennis Orcollo, Raymund Faraon, Carlo Biado, Jeffrey Ignacio and Antonio Gabica.
Bouncing off from a loss in the group stage, Kiamco, who won the Singapore Southeast Asian Games men's 9-ball doubles gold medal with Biado last June, booted out Canadian Shannon Ducharem 9-6 to set up an all-Filipino match with Faraon on Wednesday.
Medenilla had a similar result in his win against Norwegian Vegar Kristansen; Corteza dominated Tom Teriault of Canada, 9-2 while Gonzales showed the exit door to Chinese-Taipei bet Chang Jun Ling, 9-6.
Qatar-based Filipino Francisco Felicilda didn’t share the same luck as he fell victim to Polish Tomasz Kaplan 9-7.
In the race for the Last 32, Corteza will go against Carlo Biado; Ignacio will take on Jason Klatt of Canada; Gabica faces Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia; Medenilla will meet Karol Skowerski while Gonzales will be in a showdown with Japanese Yukio Akagariyama.
Former world champion and Singapore Southeast Asian Games 9-ball gold medalist Orcollo will go up against local bet Mishel Turkey.
All Last 64 games will be played on Wednesday.
