Two Pinoy junior pugs claim gold in Asian Championships

Junior Filipino boxers Kenneth Dela Peña and John Vincent Pangga tore through their competition, going all the way and claiming gold at the 2017 ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Junior national team rookie Dela Peña, a native of General Santos City, dominated the 46-KG pinweight division, getting a bye in the preliminaries and then getting past India's Selay Soy in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal match, the 16-year old Dela Peña bested Taipei's Cheng-Chen Yu before ousting Kazakhstan's Akilbek Mukhtarov in the Finals to claim gold.
Over at the 50-KG flyweight division, 15-year old Cagayan de Oro native Pangga began the tournament with a win over Uzbekistan's Amirbek Ibodulloev and then stopped UAE's Saif Alkharoossi in the first round in the quarterfinals.
Pangga outpointed Kazakh Talgat Syrymbetov in the semifinals and then beat Sarawut Suketh of Thailand on points to reign over the division.
The other two Pinoys in the tournament, Criz Laurente and Norlan Petecio weren't as fortunate.
Laurente fell to eventuall 48-KG light flyweight winner Makhmud Sabirkhan of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals, while Petecio lost to Uzbek Sherzod Kodirboev in the 60-KG lightweight quarterfinals.
