Filipino five-division world boxing champion Nonito 'The Filipino Flash' Donaire Jr. successfully made weight for his upcoming WBC Silver Featherweight championship match against Mexico's Ruben Garcia Hernandez on Saturday, September 23rd in San Antonio, Texas.
Donaire came in at 125.5 pounds, while Garcia Hernandez weighed in at 126 pounds.
This will be Donaire's first time back in the squared-circle since losing his WBO super-bantamweight crown to Jessie Magdaleno in Las Vegas last November.
With the past behind him, a rejuvenated 'Filipino Flash' is ready to get started on what he calls 'the second half' of his career.
The 34-year old Donaire signed with up-and-coming boxing promotions company Ringstar Sports earlier this year.
“I’m thankful to Ringstar Sports for believing in me. The second half of my career is going to be an explosion." Donaire said. "It’s going to be an amazing ride and everyone is going to see great fights. You know I’ll get in there with anybody."
The Pinoy boxing great has made it clear that he wants to regain his stop in the upper echelon of the boxing world, and his return bout against Garcia Hernandez is the first step.
“I’m ready to destroy everybody in my path. That’s the game plan. I want to get back to that world title shot. I will happily fight anybody for that shot to reclaim my place at the top of the division."
Ringstar Sports chairman and CEO Richard Schaefer had nothing but praise for his newest signing, who'll be making his promotional debut Saturday night.
“Nonito Donaire is a legend who doesn’t need much introduction. He’s one of the biggest names in the sport because he’s one of those guys you will never see a boring fight from. He always brings excitement and he always gives it his all."
