Football is certainly alive and well in Mindanao as over a thousand football players and enthusiasts participated in Football for a Better Life 2016’s fifth leg which was held recently in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
Football for a Better Life (FFABL) is the football grassroots development program supported by British life insurer PRU Life UK in cooperation with SPEARS Sports, the Azkals Foundation, local and regional football associations, and local government units.
Former Azkals team captain and current Azkals assistant coach Chieffy Caligdong, Azkals Amani Aguinaldo and Misagh Bahadoran, Fi-Brit footballer and sports show host Graham Caygill, and Little Azkals Agiel John “Kano” Rojo and Amir Amaikurut, conducted football clinics held at the premiere Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City. They were also present at the tournaments held in the same venue to do talent identifaction and to award the winners. Coach Percy Guarin, member of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Board of Governors, was also present at the clinics and tournaments.
Amani, who hails from Davao, said he was happy to be part of the event. “To be able to help out in teaching kids for a football clinic is a great experience,” he stated on his Instagam account. “Reminds me of the younger and smaller Amani, but with the same dream he has today.”
Graham, likewise, was thankful to be in the FFABL festivities in Davao del Norte. On his Instagram he described the weekend as “brilliant!” Graham added, “Over 1,000 people turned up for the ‘Football for a Better Life’ clinic and tournament! Thanks to PRU Life UK all the organizers for giving everyone the opportunity.”
A total 400 kids participated in the clinic and 132 teams competed in the tournaments. These teams came from the regional football associations of Davao (Davao City, Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur); Golden Davao (Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental); and CARAGA regions Agusan del Sur-Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Island, and Butuan-Agusan del Norte.
“It had the most number of participants in the clinic and teams for the grassroots tournament in the two years we’ve been conduting this program,” said Albert Almendralejo of SPEARS Sports, one of the organizers.
Lupon United FC emerged as the team with the most wins as it placed third in the 10 and Under Mixed and 12 and Under Boys categories, and first and third in the 18 and Under Boys category, and second in the Men’s Open category.
The next leg of Football for a Better Life will be in Pagadian City on November 12-13 with Chieffy Caligdong, Graham Caygill and former Azkal-turned-goalkeeping coach Reffix Cuaresma.
