Masakit man we'll take it with a grain of salt -- Gorayeb
Marami akong tinatanong sa kanila, meron kaming gagawin na ‘di nila magawa sa game, pati sa service may instruction ako ‘di nila magawa -- SSC-R coach Roger Gorayeb

San Sebastian College swallowed a bitter pill Tuesday.

It was a shocking déjà vu of last year’s championship series.

Their thrice-to-beat advantage in the Finals of 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball negated by Arellano University in a haymaker that opened an old wound.

With the series opener already in the books, head coach Roger Gorayeb would just want his players to just dust themselves off, stand up and just forget about what happened.

“Masakit man we’ll take it with a grain of salt,” said Gorayeb after the Lady Stags’ 18-25, 20-25, 16-25 loss to the streaking Lady Chiefs that reduced the series to a virtual best-of-three. “Nag-level ang playing field.”

The Lady Stags didn’t look like the same team that completed a nine-game sweep of the elimination round that propelled them directly to the Finals.

They looked like the squad that bowed to College of St. Benilde last year in four games and also armed with a thrice-to-beat.

Nothing seemed to go right for SSC-R.

Their services were either wide, long or short. They couldn’t control the first ball and worst of all the Lady Stags easily gave away 30 points to the Lady Chiefs with their errors. The Recto-based squad had no kill block.

Even reigning back-to-back Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones struggled to get her game. She did score 15 points – all off attacks – but needed 45 attempts to get it.

“Marami akong tinatanong sa kanila, meron kaming gagawin na ‘di nila magawa sa game, pati sa service may instruction ako ‘di nila magawa,” rued Gorayeb.

What was worse was the absence of SSC-R’s middles the whole game. Katherine Villegas and Joyce Sta. Rita was limited to only three points apiece after averaging near to double figures in the elims.

“Pumunta sila dito para ‘di maglaro ng championship,” said the 23-time NCAA champion coach. "‘Di gumana ang reception, kung may reception naman kapos, lampas na ‘yung set sa antenna. May instruction ako na ‘di nasusunod kung saan dadalhin ang bola sa service na ‘di nasusunod.”

“All skill sa volleyball wala, pano ka mananalo? Swerte pa kami nakapscore pa kami ng ganoon,” he added.

Gorayeb and SSC-R can redeem themselves on Game 2 slated this Friday.
