Lions dedicate win to suspended Boyet, Bolick, Doliguez
ONE FOR THE TEAM. San Beda won its ninth consecutive victory after rallying around the absence of head coach Boyet Fernandez, main man Robert Bolick, and rising star Clint Doliguez.
Head coach Boyet Fernandez, main man Robert Bolick, and rising star Clint Doliguez were all not in the Filoil Flying V Centre on Friday.
And yet, San Beda College looked like the San Beda College which had won all of their last eight games.
Forcing 16 turnovers and quickly converting them into 18 points, the defending champions made quick work of lowly Mapua University, 88-70.
AC Soberano chose the most opportune time to bust out and had 17 points to show the way in scoring without their top two scorers in Bolick and Doliguez.
Javee Mocon then provided his usual double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds this time around while also providing the leadership in lieu of fiery Bolick.
Fernandez, Bolick, and Doliguez were not in the venue as part of the league’s disciplinary action for their involvement in the Red Lions’ flareup with College of St. Benilde last Tuesday.
Of course, that San Beda still won was thanks to the prior preparations of Fernandez – even before the suspensions were made final. As team manager Jude Roque put it, “Si coach Boyet naman, he always prepares the team. Coach Boyet was still very much on top of preparations.”
He then continued, “He gave the game plan to coach JB so he came in prepared as well.”
Indeed, first lieutenant JB Sison executed the game plan to a tee and wrapped up his acting coach duties with a win – a win that was for all three Red Lions who were suspended. “We made it a rallying point for the guys who aren’t here. We dedicated the game to them,” the team manager said.
In the end, the defending champions proved how dangerous they are even without three key cogs. “I’m happy with the way we played despite the absence of our two best players. What was noticeable was everybody stepped up,” Roque said.
He then continued, “I’m happy that we didn’t look for a go-to-guy today. Everybody was able to score.”
Already having proved such, San Beda will only be even more dangerous when Fernandez, Bolick, and Doliguez all make their return a week from now up against San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
