For a while there, it looked like San Beda High School was losing its touch in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

That has all been put to rest as here come the Red Cubs, once again knocking on the door of the top spot after besting archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 63-60, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Luke Sese top-scored with 13 points, but it was total team effort which fueled San Beda’s ascent to 12-5.

Evan Nelle and Ain Obenza were the ones who showed the way in the final frame and had all the answers for the Squires’ charges. The former ended with seven points, five rebounds, and five assists while the latter finished with five markers under his belt.

The boys from Taytay started the second round by dropping three games in a row which, in turn, dropped them to as low as fourth-place.

With their fifth consecutive victory, however, this one completing an elimination round sweep of their archrivals, they have strengthened their stranglehold on solo second.

More than that, they also stand within striking distance of league-leading Mapua University.

The Red Robins yet again left a window open for the top spot they’re currently occupying after being at the wrong end of an upset by San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 80-81.

Alex Desoyo caught fire in the final frame by scoring 14 of his 25 points to front the Staglets’ comeback from as much as 19 points behind.

Baste was down by 16 at the half before flipping the switch and outscoring their opponents, 53-36, in the last two quarters.

With the big-time comeback, they entangle themselves for the fourth spot with also 10-7 Letran.

San Sebastian ends the eliminations against dangerous University of Perpetual Help (6-10) while the Squires match up with struggling College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills (11-6)

On the other hand, now 13-4 Mapua needs to take care of business against already eliminated Arellano High School to avoid any complications regarding the top-seed.

Last Thursday, the Junior Blazers were the victims of the biggest upset of the season, downed by lowly Emilio Aguinaldo High School, 77-81.

Lester Castillo and Maui Cruz fired 29 and 28 points, respectively, to lift the Brigadiers to only their second win in 17 games.

Conversely, the upset was CSB-LSGH’s fourth loss in the last five games. Once the frontrunners in the tournament, they now find themselves at third-place at 11-6 and with Letran and Baste both breathing down their necks.

In other results, the Junior Altas frustrated the Braves, 88-81.
