In a shocking development in the world of mixed martial arts, ONE Championship Chairman Chatri Sityodtong recently sat down with International Business Times in the UK and revealed that he is open to doing cross-promotional super fights with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
“I would love Dana White to give me a call and say: 'Let's do a UFC World Champion vs a ONE World Champion – let's do a cross promotion.' That is something I am very interested in,” Sityodtong said.
ONE Championship is of course the most prominent mixed martial arts organization in Asia. The company’s presence in the region is unparalleled, and they have in their roster some of the world’s best mixed martial artists.
The UFC, on the other hand, is most popular in the Western hemisphere, where they have a huge fan base. The UFC’s world champions are also among MMA’s elite.
Sityodtong strongly believes that if he and UFC President Dana White worked together, that they can build a card around a crossover bout between a ONE champion and a UFC champion.
“If the numbers work, I think we would be able to do it. I am open to it from my side. You would have to ask Dana (White) if he is open to it,” Sityodtong said.
One of the potential superfights on the table is a potential blockbuster matchup between reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela “Unstoppable” Lee and UFC Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
“Angela [Lee] is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world in any organisation. I would love to see her fight Joanna Jedrzejczyk, I think that would be a great fight. There is no question that Angela ranks among the best female fighters in the world,” said Sityodtong.
“I think what she has achieved is incredible, she deserves the attention she is getting from around the world and from other organisations. She has earned it. She is breaking records and making history.”
Lee is the youngest world champion in MMA history at 20-years-old and is undefeated with a 7-0 professional record. Meanwhile, Jedrzejczyk is also unbeaten at 13-0, and is considered by many to be one of the best female fighters in the world bar none. A showdown with Lee would be massive.
Aside from a potential Lee vs Jedrzejczyk matchup, Sityodtong believes every one of ONE Championship’s titleholders can compete against any fighter in the world.
The prospect of ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang taking on UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor, or ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren taking on UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley would be every MMA fan’s dream.
These are bouts of epic proportions, and Sityodtong says it is absolutely possible and that he would love to see it happen.
“Whether it is their lightweight champion versus our lightweight champion or Joanna Jedrzejczyk versus Angela Lee, I would love to see that and I think the world would love to see that,” Sityodtong concluded.
