Eduard Folayang will be defending more than just the lightweight championship come fight night

For the first time in ONE Championship history, two reigning titleholders will be going head-to-head in a champion-versus-champion superfight at ONE: Legends of the World in Manila.
The two divisional kings chosen for the history-making clash: lightweight champion Eduard 'the Landslide' Folayang and featherweight champion Martin 'The Situ-Asian' Nguyen.
And while both of them will be parading their belts when they walk down to the cage on fight night, only Folayang's belt will be on the line, meaning that he has more to lose. A lot more.
For the reigning lightweight king, this upcoming championship superfight isn't just about defending the lightweight title, rather it's also about defending the entire lightweight division.
Being the titleholder means that Folayang is the top guy in the division. The lightweight division 'is his kingdom', as he said, and it's his duty to defend it from a challenger from a different weight class.
"Papasukin yung division ko eh, so as much as possible, you are not only defending your own name, but also your division," Folayang said. "[Ako] yung champion doon eh."
("He's coming into my division, so I'm not only defending my name, but also my division. I'm the champion there.")
The responsibility, so to say, has helped fuel the Baguio-based champion as he heads into this historic encounter against a very game challenger in the Vietnamese-Australian Nguyen.
"It’s a lot of motivation for me to do my part in my training camp and of course most especially during the fight."
Aside from also defending his division, the Team Lakay superstar will also be defending his home turf, as he'll be fighting in front of what should be a partisan pro-Filipino crowd.
"It’s always been a joy for me to represent my country and my hometown, and may kwento pa siya kasi champion-versus-champion, so it will give a lot of motivation for me."
("It's always been a joy for me to represent my country and my hometown, plus theres the champion-versus-champion backstory, so it will give a lot of motivation for me.")
Eduard Folayang defends his ONE Championship lightweight world title against reigning ONE Championship featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen in the main event of ONE: Legends of the World on Friday, November 10th at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
