Pinay gymnast adds another gold for Team PHI
Kaitlin De Guzman and Reyland Capellan gave the PHI two gold medals in gymnastics.
KUALA LUMPUR –-- The Philippine gymnastics team added another mint to the gold collection of the country after Kaitlin De Guzman’s impressive performance in the uneven bars event Tuesday in the 29th Southeast Asian Games.
The 17-year-old gymnast finished with 12.875 points to bag the PHI’s fifth gold medal overall and second straight mint from gymnastics after Reyland Capellan dominated the men’s gymnastics floor exercise a few hours before.
The win was extra sweet for De Guzman as she duplicated her mom Tammy's gold medal finish in the same event during the 1995 edition of the biennial meet in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was the country's first women's gymnastics gold medal since 1997.
So far the PHI already has five golden finishes with the first three coming from Mary Joy Tabal, who broke the ice with a win in women’s marathon Saturday, and the triathlon golden finishes of Kim Mangrobang and Nikko Huelgas in the women’s and men’s divisions, respectively.
