Cignal, Air Force set Finals series showdown
Philippine Air Force guns for its second straight title in the Spikers' Turf Season 13 when the Jet Spikers face-off with reigning champion Cignal.
Defending champion Cignal and Philippine Air Force rekindled their championship rivalry after completing a clean sweep of their respective best-of-three semifinals series Monday in the 2nd Spikers’ Turf Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Lorenzo Capate Jr. led the way for the HD Spikers, pounding 11 kills in his total of 12 points to eliminate the Champion Supra Spikers, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, in Game 2 while the Jet Spikers showed Instituto Estetico Manila Phoenix Volley Masters the exit door bucking an opening frame setback to escape with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-17, victory.
Cignal will protect its title on Wednesday in the best-of-three championship round.
It is the two teams’ third straight Finals showdown since last year. The HD Spikers conquered last year’s edition by upending the Jet Spikers in three games but Air Force exacted revenge in the Open Conference by sweeping Cignal in the Finals.
Former Ateneo de Manila star Ysay Marasigan scored 11 points to help Capate while De La Salle hitter Raymark Woo got 10 for Cignal, which outspiked Champion Supra, 49-33.
Skipper Ace Mandani was the lone player on the Spikers side that scored in double figures with 10.
Meanwhile, Bryan Bagunas came off the bench to score 21 points with the National University star hitting 16 kills and five kill blocks despite starting his day only in the second set to lead the reigning Open Conference champion Air Force.
Mark Alfafara added 18 points while Howard Mojica unleashed 13 markers for the Jet Spikers.
No player on IEM side finished in double figures with JP Torres scoring only nine points. Edan Canlas and Jason Canlas scored seven each for the Phoenix Volley Masters.
IEM and Champion Supra will battle for the bronze medal in another best-of-three series.
