Air Force out to seal second straight title
Philippine Air Force looks to formally bag its second straight title.
Philippine Air Force goes for the title clincher Saturday in the 2nd Spikers’ Turf Reinforced Conference Finals at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Jet Spikers look to drag the defending champion Cignal HD Spikers off the throne in Game 2 of their best-of-three series and annex their second straight crown after capturing the Open Conference title against the same opponent.
Opening serve is at 12:30 p.m. and will air via livestream on sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/spikersturf.
Behind the power-hitting trio of Mark Alfafara, Bryan Bagunas and Howard Mojica, Air Force turned back the HD Spikers, 25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 25-27, 15-12, last Wednesday in the series opener.
But head coach Rhovyl Verayo warns his wards of complacency. He doesn’t want a repeat of last year when Cignal stole the championship in a come-from-behind series win.
“Kailangang hindi na namin sila bibigyan ng pagkakataon kung maaari lang na maka-regroup,” he said.
Game 3 if needed is on Monday.
The HD Spikers, which is on a four-game losing streak against their archrivals since the Open Conference Finals, will need to squeeze out more from Lorenzo Capate Jr., Ysay Marasigan, Edmar Bonono, Peter Torres and Raymark Woo to extend the series.
Meanwhile, Champion Supra also looks to seal the consolation third place trophy.
The Spikers defeated Instituto Estetico Manila, 25-19, 25-23, 27-29, 25-13, in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.
A win by the Champion Supra will give them the bronze medal. Game 3, if necessary, is on Monday. In case the Phoenix Volley Masters forced a series decider and the Finals series ends Saturday, the team with the superior tiebreak will bag the third place prize.
