Focus, determination and heart.
Focus, determination and heart.
Defending champion De La Salle University’s setter Kim Fajardo possesses these key elements in her character as a student-athlete and leader of the Lady Spikers in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
After being named PLDT Home ambassador for this season, Fajardo carried her squad into the Finals once again with her exceptional performance in the grueling two-round eliminations and Final Four, taking to heart the responsibility of being one of the faces of the brand by providing stellar individual and collective results.
Even the lure of a lucrative club career didn’t stop Fajardo from choosing to play her last year for DLSU.
The Calatagan, Batangas native returned for the green and white with the team looking to retain the crown they took from archrival two-time champion Ateneo de Manila last year, showing that above all else, bringing pride to you Alma Mater is top priority.
The 23-year old, who is playing in her swan song, made DLSU’s great crop of hitters look even better with her superb playmaking. Her leadership, as always, is exceptional, towing the Taft-based squad to an unprecedented ninth straight Finals appearance after closing the elims in second place with an 11-3 record and edging the University of Santo Tomas in the Final Four.
The two-time Best Setter winner could be looking at a third individual recognition with a season average of 11.28 excellent sets per frame on top of dominating the stats in the service line with 0.76 aces per set average.
Outside the court, Fajardo is even more impressive with the way she balances the role of being a varsity and a student. She is now on her second year of graduate school taking up marketing communication all while being one of the most dependable players of the UAAP that led her to be chosen by PLDT to be one of their ambassadors.
Fajardo shares how she uses Internet to manage her time well, “My schedule is usually full because of volleyball and school, so I don’t get to spend much time with my family. PLDT Home’s fast Internet allows me to bond with them via social media and video call so I get to see how they are and update them with my life.”
Her passion for the sport started when she was nine.
She grew up playing as a spiker during her grade school days but was converted into a setter when she was recruited by then UST high school coach Francis Vicente.
With DLSU, Fajardo has won two indoor UAAP titles in Seasons 75 and 78 while adding a beach volleyball crown in Season 78.
Fajardo was hesitant at first to her new role but learned to embrace her position and diligently honed her skills to become one of the finest setters in the country today. Her knack for timely offensive production has helped her revolutionize the setter position in the UAAP.
Her talents brought her to new heights even landing a stint in the FIVB Women’s World Club Volleyball Championship last year and one of the favorites to get a spot in the national team that will see action in the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August.
But for now, Fajardo’s focus is on carrying the Lady Spikers to another title in her final year.
