NU appoints Castillo as Lady Bulldogs head coach
Raymond 'Babes' Castillo (third from left) is the new head coach of the National University Lady Bulldogs.
National University formally appointed Raymond 'Babes' Castillo as head coach of its women’s volleyball team for the 80th Season of the UAAP.
Castillo, who steered the NU’s girls team to three straight high school titles, replaced resigned mentor Roger Gorayeb.
"I am very honored to lead the women's team, but it is a very big responsibility. I believe our team has everything, skills and talent, we just need to give them the sense of purpose and learn how we can work together," said Castillo in a press release posted by the school in its Facebook page Tuesday.
Gorayeb took the reins in the middle of Season 77, replacing Dong Dela Cruz. He was able to bring the struggling Lady Bulldogs to a stepladder semifinals stint that year. But the next two years under his watch saw NU fall out of the Final Four race.
Gorayeb submitted his courtesy resignation last April after the Lady Bulldogs’ painful end of the season loss to University of Sto. Tomas, the last of NU’s three-game losing streak that pulled them out of semis contention.
Castillo will have under his wings veterans Jorelle Singh, Aiko Urdas, Risa Sato, talented young setter Jasmine Nabor and 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago.
