Sweep repeat for Tigresses in women's beach volleyball
Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray made sure the UAAP beach volleyball championship stays at Espana.
University of Santo Tomas successfully defended its UAAP women's beach volleyball championship Saturday at the SM MOA sand courts, sweeping rival Far Eastern University in two games.
The Golden Tigresses beat the Lady Tamaraws in Game 2, 21-15, 21-19, to claim the Season 80 title.
Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray earlier beat Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza in the series opener, 21-16, 22-20.
Down 14-19 in the second set of Game 2, the Tigresses marched on, scoring the final seven points for the win. UST swept the season, winning all nine games on its way to a third title in the last four years.
"Sinabi ko na lang na hindi na kami mag-Game 3," Rondina said.
"Yun always yung nasa isip ko. At pinagkatiwalaan ko talaga si Cait kahit ganun nangyari samin [down 14-19]. Kinapitan namin and alam ko na kaya namin yun," she added.
In both games of the Finals, a rematch from Season 79, it was UST that showed better poise down the stretch of the second set, able to close out each win with authority.
For her always dominating presence, Rondina also won her third MVP award on top of the championship.
Meanwhile, it was yet another heartbreak for the Pons and Atienza as the Lady Tamaraws absorbed their third straight loss in the beach volleyball Finals.
Losing to UST in back-to-back seasons, FEU also dropped the Season 78 championship to De La Salle University.
