Red Warriors win back-to-back for first time in season
THERE YOU ARE. Mark Olayon and Mark Maloles did the heavy lifting for UE with main man Alvin Pasaol slowed down by foul trouble.
Alvin Pasaol was nowhere to be found for University of the East in the final frame on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
His other teammates, however, made their presence felt.
The Red Warriors finally flashed total team effort as they pulled off a shocker against National University, 90-77, for their first winning streak in the UAAP 80 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
After averaging 40.5 points in his last two games, Pasaol only had 11 points this time around. “He had four fouls so I felt there’s no need for us to use Alvin. I had confidence that the other guys will step up,” a more than satisfied head coach Derrick Pumaren said.
He then continued, “’Di nila ako pinahiya.”
His team, however, didn’t need much from him as guys likes Nick Abanto, Mark Maloles, and Mark Olayon took care of business in the final frame. “They gave Alvin much-needed rest. They were able to deliver and hold the fort for the team,” Pumaren said.
With the Bulldogs closing in to 65-70 inside the last seven minutes, four different players got together for the 9-2 counter that re-established a 79-67 advantage in favor of UE.
That double-digit lead would stay with them until the final buzzer.
Olayon wound up with an all-around 17 points, eight assists, and six rebounds while Maloles and Abanto chipped in 13 markers each of their own to carry their team to 2-6 in the standings.
Although he only played 19 minutes due to foul trouble, Pasaol still had a double-double with 10 rebounds to his name.
After starting the season with six losses in a row, the Red Warriors are now streaking. “If we wanna make a run, we know we have to start the second round on a winning note,” Pumaren said.
For NU, J-Jay Alejandro gave it his all and had 16 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds while Issa Gaye posted a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double.
With no impact after those two, however, they fell for the fourth time in the last five games and for the fifth time overall in eight games.
