A win is a win regardless of how you get it.

Far Eastern University picked up a victory to start its UAAP title defense Saturday, scoring a close 71-67 decision over De La Salle in the Season 80 Juniors Basketball Tournament at the San Juan Arena.

In control for three quarters, the Baby Tamaraws had to hold on for dear life in the fourth as the Junior Archers mounted a spirited rally.

"Happy ako sa performance nila, at least yung mga rookies namin they know how to finish ang mga end-game situation," head coach Allan Albano said.

"If you ask me if mukha na kaming championship caliber, malayo pa kami. Tingin ko, throughout the season, mag-improve pa kami," he added.

Still, FEU's early work was more than enough for the champs to get on the board early.

LJ Gonzales led the way for the Baby Tams with 16 points and seven assists while RJ Abarrientos added 11 poins and six rebounds off the bench.

The reserves powered the offense for La Salle with Chris Calimag finishing with 17 points off the bench. Nat Consejo had 15 while Raven Cortez submitted a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double.

In the fourth and final game of the day, UST demolished UPIS to make an early case as one of the top contenders in Season 80.

The Tiger Cubs roared their way to an impressive 97-62 victory over the Junior Maroons behind the combined efforts of John Cansino and Kobe Palencia.

Cansino fired a game-high 28 points on top of 11 rebounds while Palencia came off the bench to add 23 and nine boards.

UST broke the game open in the second half, doubling up on UP in the third period to open up an 18-point lead. For good measure, the Tiger Cubs dropped a 35-point bomb in the fourth quarter for a 35-point win.

Matt Santiago led UPIS with 15 points.
