Morente, Rondina headline new BVR leg in Ilocos

Currimao, Ilocos Norte --- Let's take a little break from basketball shall we and head back to the beach for some great volleyball action.

Beach Volleyball on Tour 2017 continues this weekend, with leg number 6 happening at the Playa Tropical resort here.

Just like leg number 5 back in Manila, the BVR has invited foreign teams to participate as Malaysia and Hong Kong will be represented in the two-day joust.

Unlike the previous five legs this year however, the Currimao leg will feature not one, not two, but three divisions with the women's collegiate, men's collegiate, and men's invitational. All three divisions will a total of 28 competing teams making this leg one of the biggest by BVR yet.

Headlining the women's collegiate division is reigning UAAP beach volleyball champion Cherry Rondina. The spitfire spiker out of UST will team up with Cecilia Bangad and will go against two Ateneo pairs made up of Mich Morente and Ria Lo as well as Ana Gopico and Gizelle Tan.

The Viray twins of San Beda will also see action together with the Mary Jane Ruiz-Myla Lim tandem of RTU.

University of Baguio's Mary Ann Atuban and Carmela Dicksen, SWU's Floremel Rodriguez and Therese Ramas, and a local team from Currimao complete the cast.

In the men's collegiate division, the usual suspects like two-time leg champions Jeremiah Barrica and Kevin Hadlocon are back, looking to win back-to-back titles to tie their rivals from UST with three leg wins each.

Speaking of those rivals from UST, Anthony Arbasto will see action in Currimao although the UAAP champion will have to make do without KR Guzman. Ian Lester Yee takes the role as Arbasto's new partner.

A second pair from FEU in Gerard Beliran and Salmar Provido will also compete. University of Baguio's Bon Jobert Hasal and Jadway Milet, Mapua's Alfred Pagulong and Sam Damian, Ateneo's Ish Polvorosa and Karl Baysa, Visayas' John Kevin Juban and Fortunato Libres, and a local team are also in.

Making things interesting in the men's collegiate division are Mohd Aizzzat Zokri and Raja Nazmi Hussin from Malaysia and Ka Yun Wong and Chun Kit Li from Hong Kong.

Finally in the men's invitational, Malaysia's Mohd Faiz Putra Rayak and Muhammad Afiq Idris banner the eight-team field that also includes Giovanni Musillo and Brian Nordberg from Hong Kong.

The Pinoy crew who will challenge the foreigners are Edilberto Denoy and Joshua Barrica from FEU, Philip Bagalay and Peejay Cuzon from OSI, Jahir Ebrahim and Julius Sioson of VNS, Carlo Sebastian and Antonio Torres from RTU, as well as a local team from Ilocos.

Champions of the BVR Currimao leg will win P50,000 in cash while second placers take home P30,000. Third placers will win P10,000 each.
