Acaylar to double national men's team's training sessions
I told them na bago tayo umalis sa Korea, I want our practice to be morning and afternoon. Because of course I want to win, and sinusupurtohan kami ng buong Pilipinas, so gusto ko naman na maganda ang resulta naming (sa SEA Games) -- national men's team coach Sammy Acaylar
Philippine national men’s volleyball team head coach Sammy Acaylar saw his wards rip apart Macau in a straight sets victory Sunday in the in the Battle of the Rivals exhibition match at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
But the seasoned mentor and coach of the 1991 Southeast Asian Game men’s team that bagged a bronze medal in the country’s last podium finish was far from satisfied with his wards’ performance.
“I told my coaches kanina na hindi ako satisfied,” said Acaylar after his squad’s 25-16, 25-16, 25-15, win over Macau, which shared the no. 137th spot with the Philippines in the FIVB rankings.
The mentor wanted to address his team’s character, mental toughness and their killer instinct.
“I told my players to respect their opponents. Parang magiging character nila ‘yun. Of course we won but I'm not satisfied, because hindi lumabas 'yung ine-ensayo namin talaga,” he said. “Maybe because, parang culture ng Pilipino na kapag alam namin na mahina at alam natin na tinalo natin ay medyo bumababa ‘yung intensity nila.”
“So I told my coaching staff to train the psychological and the character of the players na kahit sino ang kalaban namin, dapat andoon 'yung killer instinct nila,” added Acaylar, head coach of the many-time NCAA men’s champion Perpetual Help.
All of Acaylar’s scoring players produced points in their dominating win but the tactician wanted to see more from his players before they fly to Suwon, South Korea for a two-week training from July 22 to August 4 as the national team gears up for the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19 to 31.
The national team is bracketed with Indonesia and Vietnam in the SEA Games.
“So I told them na bago tayo umalis sa Korea, I want our practice to be morning and afternoon. Because of course I want to win, and sinusupurtohan kami ng buong Pilipinas, so gusto ko naman na maganda ang resulta naming (sa SEA Games),” said Acaylar. “Now, I believe na para maganda ang resulta, depende ‘yan sa preparasyon, depende sa training program.”
