Gilas-like volleyball team ‘ultimate dream’ of Chooks-to-Go
NATIONAL. Chooks-to-Go has a dream - to do in volleyball what they did in basketball.
Just this year, Gilas Pilipinas has won the gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games and the championship in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association.
The Philippine national basketball team has also been the most active it has ever been in the FIBA circuit, competing in the club and 3x3 tournaments.
All of this, done with the backing of Chooks-to-Go and Bounty.
Now, they are turning their attention to another sport that Filipinos have fallen in love with. “Volleyball is one sport that we believe may following talaga sa mga Pilipino and so, like basketball, we’re throwing our support sa volleyball as well,” president Ronald Mascarinas said.
Just like they did at the onset of their support for Gilas, Mascarinas said they envision a national volleyball team primed for success. “(We want) for us to be in a position (we are in sa) Gilas. Ang ultimate dream namin is to be able to support a national volleyball team,” he shared.
The most recent Philippine national volleyball team placed fourth in the 2017 SEA Games.
As the first step towards that “ultimate dream,” Chooks-to-Go is throwing its weight behind the 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix. “Basically, (we’re testing the waters). Once we start supporting one team kasi, parang magiging partisan kami so we want to stay neutral,” Mascarinas said.
He then continued, “Hopefully, mabuo natin yung both camps ng volleyball so we get the best of the best for our national team.”
As it turns out, the company was initially in talks to sponsor a team, but ended up supporting the entire tournament. “The opportunity came in noong binubuo nila yung Grand Prix, but when we looked at all the opportunities, we decided to be the sponsor,” the president said.
And now, Chooks-to-Go is off to a strong start in its foray into volleyball.
Still, they are hoping that they will not be alone once their “ultimate dream” turns into reality. As Mascarinas put it, “If given the opportunity, we would like to collaborate with sports patrons like Rebisco or Smart and the rest (like), probably, San Miguel.”
