TNT is the only team in the four decade-long history of the PBA that can boast about officially owning the Jun Bernardino Trophy, better known as the “Perpetual Trophy.”
Now leading 3-1 in the championship round, however, San Miguel stands oh so close to that elite company.
That is exactly why, for the Beermen, there is no reason to celebrate just yet. As team captain Arwind Santos put it, “Kung makikita mo sa mga mukha namin, seryoso kami kasi alam naming hindi pa rin ganun kadaling kunin yung isang panalong yun.”
The “Perpetual Trophy” is the grand prize in the Philippine Cup and stands at over three feet, according to a report by spin.ph. Made of pure gold, the same report mentions that it costs a cool PhP 500, 000.
As per league tradition, one trophy is to be passed from one All-Filipino champion to the next.
That is, unless a particular team wins the Philippine Cup three times in a row. Then, the trophy will be officially owned for life by that particular team.
TNT, then known by its longhand Talk n Text, was the first to achieve the feat in 2011 to 2013.
Once the “Perpetual Trophy” is officially owned by a particular team, a new trophy will have to be commissioned.
Winners of the 2015 and 2016 Philippine Cups, San Miguel is oh so close to that special place that they could smell the KaTropa.
More than the rare distinction, however, Santos said they want nothing more than to win the “Perpetual Trophy” for their big boss. “Yung boss namin, si RSA (Ramon S. Ang), gustong-gusto niyang makuha yung ‘Perpetual Trophy’ na yun. Kaya siyempre, ayaw naming sayangin yung tiwala ng boss namin diba,” he shared.
He then continued, “Kaya kailangan naming trabahuin yun. Kumbaga, kapag nakuha na yun, lahat kami masaya – pati fans at lalong-lalo na yung boss namin.”
San Miguel shoots for the Jun Bernardino Trophy on Sunday.
