Gilas #23for23 member AJ Edu was chosen as one of the 67 prospects to join the Basketball Beyond Borders camp this NBA All-Star Weekend in the Los Angeles' practice facility in El Segundo, California.
Edu, who was chosen to represent the country, got a taste of good competition as he trained with some of the great young players all over the world.
The 6-foot-10 Edu was very much thankful for the opportunity, utilizing every available minute of the three-day camp not only for his improvement, but for the country as well.
"It’s been an amazing experience really, playing with such a high level competition. It’s probably the highest level I’ve played with it’s been amazing. Some great coaches. Got to meet NBA players overall great experience," Edu told ABS-CBN News' Steve Angeles.
As one of the names earlier bared by Gilas head coach Chot Reyes in the #23for23 pool, a preparation for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, Edu hopes that his improving skills will be enough to help anchor the paint in the next few years for Gilas.
At the conclusion of the three-day camp, Edu will take his talents back to his his high school in England, and is looking to go back Stateside for a possible college stint in an NCAA school.
For Indiana Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis, who was one of the mentors in the camp, it will only a matter of time before many more unheralded talents from far-flung places be discovered and eventually play in the best hoops league in the world.
"Every year we’re getting more international players I think it’s awesome it’s great for the league having global international players in the NBA."
The community outreach program, which was founded by the NBA and FIBA in 2001 to help find and cultivate talent around the world, reaching more than 3,000 participants in over 130 countries.
In the overall history of the camp, 47 participants have been drafted into the league, while four more had been signed as free agents.
