Jeckster Apinan was the star of the show from start to finish on Thursday at the Ynares Center in Rizal.
More importantly, Apinan shone brightest when it mattered the most, hitting a layup over several defenders to carry Makati over Manila, 99-98, and onto a share of the league lead in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Apinan totaled a game-high 24 points in 8-of-11 shooting and again came through for his team when they were down by one with six seconds remaining.
Off a timeout, however, the Skyscrapers went to their main man and he went right to the hole, challenging several defenders, and willing in the game-winner.
Flanking Apinan were Cedrick Ablaza and Philip Paniamogan who scored 24 and 23 points, respectively.
Rudy Lingganay also added 16 points and five rebounds as Makati stayed spotless in the early going of the tournament.
Chris Bitoon had 24 points to pace the Stars who suffered their first setback following a season-opening win.
Meanwhile, Pasay has barged into the win column after ruining the home debut of Rizal, 87-81.
Shaq Alanes topped the scoring column with 17 points for the now 1-1 Voyagers.
