Oh yes, Gilas is headed to the World Championships for the second straight time and it’s time to party. (FIBA)

Well what do you know, Gilas Pilipinas on Sunday got the win and the help it so desparately needed in the Asian Qualifiers.

After the end of five games with the same start time, the Philippines somehow found a way to make the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.

Oh yes, Gilas is headed to the World Championships for the second straight time and it’s time to party.

41

Total points for Andray Blatche against Kazakhstan.

Blatche had five triples right in the opening period and had 23 at the break to lead the Gilas offense. Without him playing a second straight brilliant game, who knows if the Philippines even beats Kazakhstan on the road.

1 + 1

Gilas needed a win against Kazakhstan and at the very least a loss from a particular team/s from the other group in the Asian Qualifiers.

Gilas got its win and only one of the teams that we needed to lose ended up doing so.

Lebanon dropped a home game just before Gilas wrapped up its win over Kazakhstan, that allowed the Philippines to qualify to the World Cup outright with a better win-loss record (7-5 to Lebanon’s 6-6).

The team that did Gilas a solid by beating Lebanon? South Korea.

2 (but really, 3)

Consecutive FIBA World Cup appearances for Gilas Pilipinas.

The Philippines’ 2014 stint in Spain was the country’s first in three decades. But with Gilas qualifiying for the 2019 edition in China, that makes three straight World Cup appearances for the national team in nine years.

This year is the second straight time and Gilas will return in 2023 as the Philippines will co-host the World Championships with Japan and Indonesia.

6

Number of Gilas players in Kazakhstan that has previous World Cup experience.

Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, Gabe Norwood, Japeth Aguilar, Paul Lee, and June Mar Fajardo all suited up for the Philippines in Spain five years ago and now, they help Gilas secure a second straight trip to the Worlds.

13

A couple of days after having its best shooting night in these Asian Qualifiers agaisnt Qatar, Gilas had its second-best shooting night against Kazakhstan, firing 13 triples.

Blatche had five of them while Jayson Castro was a perfect 4/4 from deep. Paul Lee and Marcio Lassiter also hit at least a couple each.
