Sandy Arespacochaga has been named as the new head coach of Batang Gilas.
And in ushering in the new era of the national youth basketball team, coach Sandy will be joined by five other champion coaches.
According to sources, part of the staff of the new Batang Gilas mentor are Goldwin Monteverde, Charles Tiu, Ryan Betia, JB Sison, and Anton Altamirano.
Like Arespacochaga, who won eight titles as part of the staff in Ateneo de Manila University, all of his assistants know a thing or two about championships.
Monteverde is fresh off winning his first UAAP championship with Nazareth School of National University. Before that, he has also guided his teams to winning it all in the National Basketball Training Center, Palarong Pambansa, Metro Manila Basketball League, and the now-defunct Tiong Lian Basketball League, among others.
Tiu called the shots for Go for Gold when it won the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup while Betia and Altamirano were on their respective benches when Far Eastern University and NU hoisted the UAAP trophy. Sison, meanwhile, guided San Beda High School to a handful of championships.
The new regime of the national youth basketball team will wage its first war in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in June. There, Kai Sotto is still expected to be the Philippines' main man.
