San Beda University has put the greatest of responsibilities on the shoulders of James Canlas and Evan Nelle and up against De La Salle University on Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre, the young guns did nothing but come through in their 83-78 decision.
Canlas dropped 20 points, all but five coming in the final frame, while Nelle turned in five of his 12 points in the last two minutes as the Red Lions maintained their spotless slate through five games in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Nono Noah and Donald Tankoua also combined for 18 points and eight rebounds to help the three-time NCAA champions fight off the very game Green Archers.
La Salle remained threatening in the endgame thanks to Andrei Caracut's triple that pulled them within 78-80 only to see Nelle respond with his very own three to put the game away once and for all for San Beda. "These two second-year payers, I hope they will mature early and help lead this team," head coach Boyet Fernandez said post-game.
The green and white was led by Caracut who had 14 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Backstopping him was then Justine Baltazar who had 13 markers, seven boards, and three blocks.
