Ray Parks Jr. was offered the opportunity to wear the flag in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, but will not be donning the blue, red, and white anytime soon.

This, according to Philippine national team head coach Yeng Guiao. “We have a few other names na gusto naming imbitahan. Actually, for today, we invited Ray Parks, but he declined,” he told reporters following their second practice in preparation for the world meet in August.

Pressed for details, coach Yeng said it was actually team liaison officer Yvette Reyes who was in contact with Parks Jr. “My understanding is he declined to be part of the pool. Ang nangyari kasi is I asked ma’am Yvette to get in touch with him,” he shared.

He then continued, “My understanding is may iba siyang priorities.”

The last time the second overall pick in the 2019 PBA Draft wore the flag was in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. He was also a member of the Gilas cadets that won gold in the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia.

Parks Jr. is, at present, averaging 23.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.71 steals for Blackwater in his first conference in the PBA.

He would have been a big boost to the Philippine backcourt that still has question marks regarding the status of stalwart Jayson Castro as well as Kiefer Ravena.

“We’re just going to have to look for some other people whom we can consider in the national pool,” the Gilas mentor said.
