Sportsman and 3x3 basketball godfather Ronald Mascariñas stressed that his group doesn’t harbor any hard feelings towards the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas’ non-inclusion of players from their league to the 30th Southeast Asian Games pool.
SBP announced on Thursday the 12-man pool for the biennial meet that the country will host in November with no one from the Chooks-to-Go 3x3 basketball league, which houses 49 of the country’s Top 50 3x3 athletes, making the list.
The pool is composed of PBA players CJ Perez, Robert Bolick, Terrence Romeo, Anthony Semerad, Chris Newsome, Ian Sangalang, Mac Belo, Chris Banchero, Raymond Almazan, Jason Perkins, Mo Tautuaa, and Baser Amer.
“Al Panlilio just released the 12 players shortlisted for the SEA Games. And these are all PBA players,” said Mascarinas.
“Personally, I'm sad for the players because our players are really expecting to represent the country, they take pride, they've sacrificed a lot for this league but our ultimate objective really is the Olympic Qualifying Tournament,” he added
However, the Chooks-to-Go boss cleared that his group respects the decision of the sports local governing body and will continue to support the SBP.
“I understand and we support the position of the SBP to utilize PBA players with the aim to popularize 3x3,” he said. “So sa amin, I'm just personally so sad for the players, they've always wanted to serve the country. But given na yun ang decision ng SBP, we will continue to support the SBP.”
Mascariñas would also want to extend his help to SBP in training the pool.
“We’re inviting the shortlisted players to join the MelMac Cup. Dito sila mag-practice so they’ll be able to measure up, they can learn from a lot of our players who has been to a lot of international tournaments,” he said.
