Maui Cruz hopes to follow in the footsteps of Sidney Onwubere as homegrown stars for EAC

Emilio Aguinaldo College did not have to look far and wide for much-needed help next season.

Long-time Brigadiers main man Maui Cruz is staying in San Marcelino. “EAC pa rin po ako maglalaro. Loyal po ako rito,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.

Cruz led the league in scoring with 19.7 points per game a year ago. He was two points better than closest competitor Jielo Razon.

The five-foot-nine guard also normed 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals.

All of that was all for naught, however, as EAC only had two wins to show in 18 games.

The lowly standing actually kept Cruz as a secret to just about everybody, but without a doubt, he has long been the lone bright spot for the talent-lacking Brigadiers.

Now, the 19-year-old will move up as a General to play alongside Juju Bautista and Jerome Garcia. There, he will have a chance to utilize his scoring prowess more efficiently while also making a lot more plays for a lot more capable teammates.

Cruz is expected to fill the hole left by Francis Munsayac.

And for the program as a whole, he hopes to have the same success of Sidney Onwubere who starred for the school in both the Juniors and the Seniors.
