San Sebastian College needed only 61 minutes to claim its fourth straight win at the expense of the hapless Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-23, 25-6, 25-14, Sunday to move up to solo third spot in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition.
Nika Dalisay had a game-high 16 points for the Lady Stags’ walk in the park win at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. SSC-R improved to a 5-2 win-loss slate behind unbeaten Final Four-bound defending champion Arellano University (7-0) and San Beda College (6-1).
The victory also pushed the Lady Stags closer to one of the last three remaining Final Four berths.
Dalisay smacked 12 spikes and scored four from the service line while Dangie Encarnacion and skipper Joyce Sta. Rita finished with 10 markers each for the Recto-based squad, which will close their elims campaign with games against the Lady Red Spikers on Tuesday and a Finals rematch with the Lady Chiefs on Thursday.
Julie Tiangco added nine markers with eight coming off service aces for the Lady Stags, who had 18 service winners while pounding the Lady Pirates with 33 attack points.
LPU gave SSC-R a scare in the opening set, saving five set points to cut their 18-24 deficit to just a single point before Encarnacion foiled the Lady Pirates comeback with a closing hit.
But it proved to be the Intramuros-based squad’s last hurrah in the match as LPU absorbed their fourth straight defeat for a 1-6 mark.
Bien Juanillo had eight points while Christine Miralles finished with six for LPU.
Meanwhile, the Pirates outlasted the Stags in a come-from-behind 24-26, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-13, win to tie their victim at 2-5 slate in men’s division.
In juniors play, the Junior Pirates scored their second in six outings with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-14, 25-20, win over the winless Staglets.
