Renzo Navarro and Jayson David reminded San Sebastian College-Recoletos what is has been missing in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament and rallied Lyceum of the Philippines to a 80-69 comeback win, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Navarro and David, both transferees from Baste, connived for the bookending threes to the 13-0 run inside the last seven minutes that erased a five-point deficit and erected a 74-66 advantage in favor of the Pirates. "We all know coming into the game that we are not out there to beat San Sebastian. We are out there to play our best," head coach Topex Robinson, himself a Sebastino, said post-game.
Both the lead and the momentum would stay with them all the way to their first back-to-back wins following a 1-1 start to the season.
In the end, Navarro turned in his best game in maroon and grey with 11 points while David contributed 10 markers, six rebounds, and three assists of his own.
They were joined by Marcelino twins Jayvee and Jaycee who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, while also merging for five assists, four rebounds, and four steals.
LPU also unleashed Cameroonian powerhouse Mike Nzeusseu for the first time and he had six points and six rebounds in his season debut.
At the other end, the Marcelino twins, Navarro, Reymar Caduyac, and Nino Ibanez all conspired to make things tough for Baste super scorer RK Ilagan who was held scoreless and only had four attempts to go along with five assists and two rebounds. "We know how important RK is to them so I just told them that we cannot really zero him, but we can limit him," coach Topex said.
In Ilagan's place, Allyn Bulanadi topped the scoring column for the Golden Stags with 13 points while Ramil Tero and Itchie Altamirano also added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
Without a doubt, however, they sorely missed their pint-sized playmaker's production and suffered their first setback in three games.
