San Beda University completed a clean sweep of the elimination round in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
That meant that the Red Lions automatically advanced into the Finals while watching the three other semifinalists go at one another in the stepladder playoffs.
That also meant, however, that the three-time defending champions have not played an officially sanctioned game in nearly a month.
"We maximized those days by giving our players rest days to recuperate from their pains and aches," head coach Boyet Fernandez answered when asked about their 26-day layoff. "We also allowed our players to catch up on their classes."
The last time the red and white took the floor in the tournament was last October 17 when it outclassed Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Since then, they have apparently recharged all while witnessing fellow Finalist and archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran having to hack out hardfought triumphs over San Sebastian College-Recoletos and LPU.
That doesn't mean, however, that San Beda hasn't been hard at work as it continues its quest for another four-peat. "We did practice. We had two tuneup games before we play in the Finals," Coach Boyet said.
He then continued, "There is no question na mas maganda pa rin kung may actual game, pero yan ang advantage and disadvantage for having won all games in the eliminations."
Still, the multi-titled mentor vowed that the Red Lions will do nothing but go all-out as they take the floor once more. "Siyempre, Finals na ito e tapos San Beda-Letran pa so we're confident what we did was best to prepare," he said.
