Colegio de San Juan de Letran oh so close to sweeping San Beda University in Game 2 of the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Finals, Friday at MOA Arena.
Only, Larry Muyang and Bonbon Batiller both fell short in finishing the job in the last minute.
Without a doubt, the Knights could have used the player that got them back in the game in the first place following a 0-15 disaster of a start.
Unfortunately, Fran Yu was glued to the bench for all of the last four minutes as the left side of his body was cramping up. "'Di na kaya kasi umangat na talaga eh hanggang tiyan. Binuhat na lang nila ako eh kasi 'di ko na kayang maglakad," he shared.
The breakout star went down at the 3:41 mark of the final frame and had to be subbed out.
By that time, he already had 23 points on an efficient 7-of-13 shooting to go along with five assists and two rebounds, but would also be unable to return.
With the two teams ending up that near to one another, Yu’s hot hands would have been much welcome for Letran.
After all, it was he who was at the receiving end of MVP chants especially when he scored 11 points in a four-minute span bridging the third and fourth and quarters. "Nagpapasok lang tira ko nun. Ganun lang naman talaga - pag mainit ka, tumira ka at pag wala, dumepensa ka," he said.
Of course, if he had his way, the 5-foot-10 playmaker would have gone back to be part of the fightback.
His left leg wouldn’t let him, however, and he was forced to sit on the bench while witnessing the Knights fell short. "Masakit kasi wala akong natulong sa team nung dulo," he said.
And so, Letran could only wonder what could have been if it was at full strength until the very end. "Siyempre, si Fran, maganda yung linaro ngayon eh. Kung andun si Fran, siyempre, ibang storya," team captain Jerrick Balanza said.
