Jeff Napa was a big part of Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s toppling of archrival San Beda University in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Finals.
Among the so-called “all-star” coaching staff behind Bonnie Tan, Napa was the most active presence behind the bench as the Knights topped the Red Lions in the best-of-three championship round for their first title since 2015.
Coach Jeff was often seen standing just right behind the blue and red bench, either in the ear of coach Bonnie or giving instructions to the likes of Jerrick Balanza and Bonbon Batiller.
That dynamic was pretty interesting as, earlier in the year, Napa's contract did not get renewed by the Intramuros-based school.
With that, Tan, formerly team consultant, took over.
Still, coach Jeff remained very much part of Letran, albeit behind the scenes.
Now, however, he has been given an official role - team consultant.
School special assistant to the rector for sports development - and San Miguel Corporation sports director - Alfrancis Chua himself bared the development in the Knights' championship celebration last Wednesday.
For that, Napa is nothing but grateful. "Masaya ako sa tiwalang binigay sa akin ni boss Al, coach Bonnie, boss Waiyip [Chong], at ng buong team. Hindi sila nagdalawang-isip na ibalik ako sa team," he said.
Nothing much changes for the multi-titled mentor in the Jrs., except for his new formal title as he will only continue helping out coach Bonnie with Letran now having to gear up for a title defense.
"Malaking tulong si coach Jeff sa amin dito sa championship na ito lalo na sa players," newly crowned champion Tan said. "Siya ang bumuo ng team na ito at nakikinig talaga yung players sa kanya."
