Team Lakay athletes are generally known for staying in shape in-between bouts, but Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio admits that he’ll have to do extra-work to get to his desired shape.
Eustaquio will be stepping in to face Yuya Wakamatsu in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix alternate bout at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on 2 August at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Wakamatsu was originally slated to face former World Title challenger Reece "Lightning" McLaren, but McLaren was given a second chance in the tournament after Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov pulled out - forging a match between Kingad and McLaren in the semis of the GP.
Being one of the latest additions to the card, Eustaquio admits to not being in shape for the competition, but remains confident given there’s roughly more than two weeks to spare for this match.
"I'm in shape, but not in fighting shape before I got the call because it is not healthy to be in fighting shape always. I believe I can still make it for this fight," Eustaquio confessed.
"He's a great kid, we’re preparing a bit late so for now I will focus on myself so I can be in one hundred percent fighting shape,” Eustaquio added. “It’s hard but it’s not impossible."
Wakamatsu has so far gone 0-2 in The Home of Martial Arts. He made his debut in the organization when he lost by unanimous decision against Danny Kingad at ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES last September.
He then locked horns with pound-for-pound great Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson at ONE: A NEW ERA this past March where he held his own before bowing to the American via second-round submission.
Make no mistake about it though, Wakamatsu is better than his record suggests and Eustaquio knows that,
“Now I’m beginning to see how he moves, what his tendencies are cause I’m studying him intently now,” Eustaquio shared.
“He’s a sharp striker. He’s a very good kid.”
A win over Wakamatsu would mark Eustaquio's second consecutive win since he lost his ONE Flyweight World Title to longtime rival Adriano "Mikinho" Moraes at ONE: HERO'S ASCENT last January.
With the upcoming match being an alternate bout in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, a win from the Team Lakay star would also mean that he gets to enter the tournament should any of the athletes in the bracket pull out before the finals.
