On October 13th, ONE Championship heads back to the historic Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan for ONE: Century, the promotion’s 100th event. To mark the milestone in the promotion’s history, ONE will be putting together a two-part fight card that features a handful of their biggest stars as well as a number of exciting prospects.
Looking to regain his place atop the bantamweight division will be Team Lakay’s Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, as he challenges reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “Flash” Fernandes in what will be ONE’s first-ever tetralogy.
After a disappointing end to their last encounter at ONE: A New Era in Tokyo back in March, Belingon is out to prove that he is the rightful king of the division.
For the fourth time in their careers, Belingon and Fernandes will share the cage with the ONE Bantamweight World Championship on the line.
This is Kevin Belingon’s road to ONE: CENTURY.
Regarded as one of the most vicious strikers from the famed Team Lakay stable up in La Trinidad, Belingon made a name for himself by going undefeated in his first eight professional bouts and then making the jump to the ONE Championship banner in 2012.
On the big stage, Belingon suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in his career, falling to Japanese legend Masakazu Imanari and South Korean contender Soo Chul Kim.
The Benguet Province-native would go 4-2 in his next six bouts, earning him his first shot at gold against Fernandes.
In their first matchup in 2016, the more experienced Fernandes was just a bit too much for Belingon to handle, as he steamrolled the Pinoy en route to a first-round submission win.
The title loss would mark the beginning of what would be an amazing run from Belingon, as he would rack up five straight wins, featuring a pair of highlight-reel knockout finishes against former title contenders Toni Tauru, Reece McLaren, and Andrew Leone.
After sending demolishing Leone in spectacular fashion, Belingon’s case as a title contender became undeniable. An injury to the champion Fernandes however, would come in the way of a rematch between the two bantamweight stars, ultimately setting up an interim bantamweight world title super-fight between Belingon and then-two division world champion Martin Nguyen.
Against the promotion’s first-ever two-division king, Belingon left no doubt as to who was the rightful number one contender as he frustrated Nguyen en route to a five-round decision win.
Belingon was, at long last, a world champion, but more importantly, he would be getting his rematch soon.
“The Silencer” would get his long-awaited rematch later that year, and two years after coming up short in his first chance at gold, Belingon something that was never done before, as he became the first man to dethrone Fernandes, winning via Split Decision to end the Brazilian’s six-year undefeated streak and his five-year reign as ONE Bantamweight Champion.
With the series tied at one win apiece, the rivalry-ending trilogy was slated to take place at ONE’s historic debut in Japan. Unfortunately, instead of providing a clear conclusion, there was controversy, as Belingon was disqualified for unintentional illegal blows to the back of Fernandes’ head.
The match was stopped in the third round after Fernandes was unable to continue and he would end up taking the belt home, but neither side was happy with the end, prompting an immediate rematch.
Now, these two bitter rivals run it back in The Land of the Rising Sun, with the hopes of finally putting the final touches to what has become ONE Championship’s biggest rivalry to date.
Belingon and Fernandes will be one of the co-main events of ONE: Century Part 2
