Team Lakay proved once again why they are more dangerous when their backs are against the wall after scoring a resounding sweep at ONE: MASTERS OF FATE on Friday, 8 November.
Joshua “The Passion” Pacio capped off the night when he submitted Rene “The Challenger” Catalan to retain the ONE Strawweight World Title in a rare all-Filipino main event at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines.
“It’s an amazing night for us, Geje won via TKO in the third round. Eduard, though we’re not happy with what happened to him, he won. Joshua Pacio of course retained his belt,” Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao said.
“I just want to thank the people who supported us through thick and thin, our sponsors, and ONE Championship. To God be the glory.”
“We’re very happy at the end of this year we made it again to the top. That’s life. Sometimes you fall but you just have to get up and do your job. As long as we’re living, there’s still victory.”
It is the same old story for the elite martial arts stable out of Baguio City – just when everyone expects them to be done and out, they rise above their struggles and perform even better.
Take, for example, their grappling. The team suffered three submission losses over the past three months, and they were called out for it.
Instead of wallowing in defeat, the team continued to work hard and they were rewarded before the year ended.
Pacio scored a masterful arm-triangle as he passed Catalan’s guard multiple times, secured the mount, and applied the submission.
Eustaquio showed improved grappling defense after he was put in the same situation against Tauru, with the Finn getting his back. But there was no defying “Gravity” this time for Tauru as the 30-year-old managed to escape and score a beautiful KO win in the third round.
At the end of the day, people will keep on talking and Team Lakay is listening.
“We were just mainly doing our assignments everyday – working and grinding,” Sangiao said.
“We would also like to thank our bashers, because we’re learning and we’re seeing our shortcomings through them. They are one of our motivations."
