Columbian gave itself a much-needed shot in the arm in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup after getting the better of fading Phoenix, 115-107, on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
John Fields was a force and pounded in a powerful double-double of 29 points and 26 rebounds on top of six assists, a block, and a steal while little-known Jerramy King made noise in stuffing the stat sheet with 15 markers, 10 boards, five dimes, two pilfers, and a rejection.
It was Rashawn Mccarthy, though, who spearheaded the 15-7 rush in the final frame that broke off a tied tally of 79-all and built up a 94-86 advantage in favor of the Dyip.
Both the lead and the momentum would stay with the until the final buzzer.
Those three weren’t the only ones who brought it for Columbian as they counted a total of six players in double-digits. “We talked about our locals needing to contribute more – not just offensively, but more importantly, defensively as well,” head coach Ricky Dandan said post-game.
Mccarthy wound up with 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Glenn Khobuntin and Eric Camson also added 18 and 13 markers, respectively.
With the gutsy win, the Dyip arrested their three-game skid and advanced to the seventh spot at 4-5. “This is a big win for us because this puts us in a better position for a playoff berth. I hear (the magic number for the playoffs) is six (wins),” Dandan said.
He then continued, “We’re at four and that’s a good position for us.”
On the other hand, the struggles continue for Phoenix which suffered a third straight loss to drop to 3-5.
Eugene Phelps fronted the effort for them with 34 points and 22 rebounds while Matthew Wright also had 32 markers to his name.
