After a full offseason with Phoenix, Calvin Abueva is ready to unleash the Beast.
Coming over from Alaska mid-season last year, Abueva helped Phoenix get its best finish ever in the PBA, taking the no. 2 seed in the 2018 Governors’ Cup.
However, inexperience and lack of maturity doomed the Fuel Masters come playoff time, losing a twice-to-beat advantage to Meralco and getting eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In the Philipine Cup for this season, the team hopes to right some of the wrong stuff from last year.
“Pine-prepare ko talaga to kasi ito best [conference] na All-Filipino, walang import,” Abueva said.
“Kailangan namin ilabas yung maturity namin and itaas pa pagdating ng quarters,” he added.
After getting to the playoffs with his new team on the first try, Abueva is even more motivated this season.
As with everyone else in the team, Calvin wants Phoenix at the top.
“Syempre talagang mas lalo ko mino-motivate yung sarili ko para makatulong sa team na ito,” Abueva said.
“Ito sa All-Filipino, may mga nadagdag samin and kailangan ko din silang tulungan mag-contribute kung ano gagawin sa court,” he added.
