After entering the PBA through a special Gilas Pilipinas draft, the batch of national team cadets never really had a chance to team up and show what they can do together on the basketball court.
Three years later, they finally get their chance as the core of that 2016 Gilas cadets team will make up the core of the Juniors squad that will see action in the 2019 PBA All-Star Games in Calasiao, Pangasinan.
Matthew Wright, RR Pogoy, Mac Belo, Jio Jalalon, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, Mike Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Russel Escoto, and Carl Bryan Cruz were all part of the Gilas Pilipinas cadets pool a couple of years back.
Now, the third-year pros finally get the chance to work together and they will be joined by Rashawn McCarthy and Ael Banal to complete the Juniors team coached by Phoenix’s Topex Robinson.
The Gilas cadets will face a loaded group of PBA Rookies and Sophomores led by current no. 1 pick CJ Perez and Rookie of the Year Jason Perkins.
Also seeing action for the RS team are Jeron teng, Raymar Jose, Rey Nambatac, Robbie Herndon, Mark Tallo, Abu Tratter, Paul Desiderio, Trevis Jackson, Javee Mocon, and Robert Bolick. They will be coached by Rain or Shine’s Chris Gavina.
The Rookies and Sophomores vs. Juniors game went away from the PBA All-Star Games for a while but it makes a grand return this year to mark the 30th anniversary of the game format.
The 2019 PBA All-Star weekend is supported by cignal/PBA Rush, Tag Huer, Peak, Molten/Mueller, Gatorade and Crystal Clear. RSJ game tip off will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday in Calasiao right after the Skills Challenges.
