Magnolia barely avoided an absolute collapse in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup semifials.
The Hotshots watched James Yap miss a final three-pointer in Game 4, holding on for a crucial 94-91 win rain or Shine Monday at the Big Dome.
After Jio Jalalon put Magnolia up three, the Hotshots had 3.1 seconds to stop the Elasto Painters and avoid overtime.
Yap received the ball for a final play and his step-back triple hit the back iron as time expired.
With Magnolia’s win, this best-of-7 series is now tied at two games each.
“We just tied the series,” said head coach Chito Victolero.
“It boils down to a best-of-3, happy and proud of the players they stepped up big in this game,” he added.
Magnolia was up 21 when ROS slowly but surelt chipped away the deficit, setting up a wild finish.
James Yap hit a booming triple to cut Magnolia’s lead 92-89 with 1:05 to go but the former two-time MVP failed to do a follow up for the Elasto Painters in the game’s final play, allowing the Hotshots to escapee.
Ian Sangalang led a balanced Magnolia attack with 19 points. Six other Hotshots also finished in double figures with Paul Lee adding 15 and Jio Jalalon contributing 12 points.
Yap led all scorers with 24 points for his best game of these semifinals.
