If Ginebra coach Tim Cone had his way, his super import Justin Brownlee would be the one reinforcing Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA tournaments.
He’s said it before and he’d still gladly say it now.
“Isn’t Justin amazing? I tell ya, I know that Andray [Blatche] is a great player, and I know all those guys. I really don’t have any say in that, but I tell you my vote goes for Justin for the national team,” Cone said Sunday after Justin Brownlee scored 27 points in a Ginebra win against Meralco in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
“He can change a team, not just by his play, but by his personality,” the champion mentor added.
Andray Blatche will most definitely suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup in China starting September.
It’s not a stretch to think about that Blatche will still be the no. 1 priority for the Philippines as a naturalized player in official tournaments for the foreseeable future.
However, Brownlee should rightfully be given a look as well if Cone is asked.
The versatile Ginebra import actually has his mother company’s backing for naturalization.
While that process wasn’t necessarily started with the sole purpose of Brownlee suiting up for the national team, it certainly paves the way once it’s completed.
“I’m not sure right now. Hopefully the process is still going forward and it’s not standing still or going backwards. I’m still excited for it. I’m just being patient and whatever happens, happens,” Brownlee said on his naturalization.
“I know boss RSA (Ramon Ang) and boss Al, [Chua] and Sheryl [Reyes] when she was alive, she was handling a lot of that. Right now I’m really not sure, but I’ll try to connect with whoever has something to do with it,” he added.
If given the chance, Browlee will pounce on the opportunity to play for the Philippine national team.
“Man, I’d definitely be honored to play and represent the country,” Brownlee said.
“That’s definitely been a dream of mine since I’ve been here in the Philippines now and connecting to the Philippine culture and the people, it’s been unbelievable,” he added.
