Justin Brownlee to the rescue as always.
The league’s reigning Best Import drilled a clutch corner triple in the final 90 seconds and defending champion Brgy. Ginebra escaped Northport Saturday in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the MOA Arena, 73-70.
Tied at 70, the Gin Kings found Brownlee sitting in the corner and Ginebra’s resident super import calmly drilled the go-ahead triple with 1:29 left.
Ginebra then managed to hold on in the final 36 seconds as the Batang Pier missed three attempts from deep that would have sent the game in overtime.
“I coached poorly I thought it was a loss,” head coach Tim Cone said.
“The zone really bothered us, gave us a hard time finding high-percentage shots. Our defense kept us in the game, we basically survived with our offense,” he added as his Gin Kings climb to 2-1 in the standings.
It was a close game throughout with no team having any significant leads.
It came down to who made the more timely shots and the Gin Kings did courtesy of Brownlee.
Ginebra’s super import finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six rebounds. He also had five steals for a true all-around effort.
After Brownlee, Greg Slaughter was Ginebra’s top local with 16 points.
Northport missed out on solo first with the loss, dropping to 3-1.
Mo Tautuaa was the high man for the Batang Pier with 15 points while Sean Anthony was good for 14 markers.
