In the Philippine Cup, Phoenix was the surprise team, taking the no. 1 seed with an impressive 9-2 record.
In the Commissioner’s Cup, Northport has taken that role as the Batang Pier are closing in on a twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals with a strong 8-2 record, good enough for solo second so far.
The Batang Pier can lock up their playoff bonus with another win or a Magnolia loss. They take over no. 1 in the playoffs even if they just tie TNT at the end of the elimination round. The KaTropa are holding on to first place with an 8-1 mark.
Still, there will be no celebration on the part of Northport despite its record.
“Sarap sa feeling,” rookie Robert Bolick said of their current 8-2 mark.
“[Pero] wang muna kaming magsaya kasi wala pa naman kaming na-accomplish eh. Wala pa kaming napatunayan,” he added.
Northport has done its part of taking care of business in the elimination round.
The Batang Pier are now starting to prepare for the playoffs, where the games truly count. This strong regular season performance will go to waste if Northport fails to get anything in the postseason.
“Gusto namin sa playoffs namin gagawin,” Bolick said.
“At least now, medyo malakas yung chance namin sa twice-to-beat. Ito yung pine-prepare namin [playoff run]. Hopefully. Tignan natin,” he added.
