Felt good for my first time playing here in the Philippines, in the PBA. I felt I really helped our team tonight -- Khapri Alston

Khapri Alston announced his arrival in the PBA with a productive debut for Columbian Dyip.

The import dropped a double-double with 38 points and plucked down 22 rebounds in Dyip’s 117-110 win over Alaska on Friday in the 2019 Governors' Cup at the MOA Arena.

“I feel good about it,” said the bulky 6-foot-3 import. “Felt good for my first time playing here in the Philippines, in the PBA. I felt I really helped our team tonight.”

Alston bulldozed his way to an efficient 12-of-19 shooting from the field and even dished out four assists and three steals and showed no signs of slowing down in 44 minutes of action.

Head coach Johnedel Cardel was all smiles talking about his workhorse of an import.

“'Di lang happy, happy na happy kasi 'yun 'yung wala sa team namin, 'yung pumoposte, go-to guy,” he said.

Cardel felt that Alston was just warming up.

“Meron pa [ilalabas]. Actually in the fourth quarter he didn't score more points but he made 38 points and 22 rebounds,” the mentor said.

Cardel said that he warned Alston, who last played in Uruguay, of the highly-physical type of play in the PBA but the import seemed to be comfortable with it.

“S’yempre he's adjusting to the Filipino way of the game. I told him it's a very physical game. This is PBA, it's different from the other countries' league. It's tougher,” Cardel said.

“It's pretty much the same, but here the refs let you get away with a little bit more,” said Alston. “But it's pretty physical, especially with me playing in the post with my size. It's pretty physical.”

Right now, Alston is looking to trim down by at least 15 to 20 pounds to get to his ideal playing weight.

“I'm trying to get it down. I took two weeks off prior to playing here because I was playing so long and I had to spend some time with my son and my family,” said the currently 260 lbs. Alston. “My weight picked up a little bit but I'm working very hard, the coaches and my teammates are pushing me to continue to get my weight down.”

Columbian will take on Rain or Shine on Sunday.
