BaliPure libero Jewelle Bermillo was just doing her job when she tried to save the ball in the closing moment of the first set of the Water Defenders’ match against defending champion Creamline on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference.
She was about to get the ball that could’ve extended the frame with Creamline already at set point, 24-19.
However, Montenegrin import Danijela Dzakovic was also trying to get to the ball from the backline.
Unfortunately, all their efforts came into naught as they failed to keep the play alive.
It was just an all too common case of miscommunication, but what happened next made Dzakovic and Bermillo a topic that went viral on social media.
In a spur of the moment reaction after losing the set, Dzakovic hit Bermillo on the back of her head out of frustration that shocked not only their teammates but everyone who saw the play and the replays that followed.
“Sobrang nagulat ako. Tinawanan ko po pero hindi ko napigilan [umiyak]. Sobrang sakit pero okay lang part ng game,” said Bermillo after BaliPure’s 19-25, 15-25, 18-25, defeat.
The hit on her head was so hard, Bermillo even lost one of her contact lens.
“Sa sobrang lakas po natanggal ‘yung contact lens ko,” said the San Sebastian College standout.
The reaction of the audience went from a gasping “ohhhh!” during the slow motion replay to just plain pity on Bermillo.
“Siguro ‘yung heat of the moment tsaka siyempre frustration na rin siguro gusto na manalo,” said BaliPure coach Rommel Abella.
Realizing her mistake, Dzakovic immediately hugged then already in tears Bermillo.
“Nag-apologize naman siya sabi niya nadala lang siya sa emosyon niya,” said Bermillo.
It ended well for both Dzakovic and Bermillo but unfortunately, BaliPure’s conference ended in a frustratingly winless campaign.
