All-Filipino last year, we lost to PetroGazz. Reinforced this year, we lost to PetroGazz and I think this is the first game we won an (opening) game again. So, we're really happy -- Alyssa Valdez

Defending champion Creamline made sure that the string of opening game defeats won’t haunt them in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference.

Although returning Philippine Air Force gave the Cool Smashers quite a challenge in the early going of the match, Creamline pulled through with a convincing win to set its title-retention bid in motion on Sunday.

“All the time. I think, back-to-back. All-Filipino last year, we lost to PetroGazz. Reinforced this year, we lost to PetroGazz and I think this is the first game we won an (opening) game again. So, we're really happy,” said Alyssa Valdez following the Cool Smashers’ 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, win.

Creamline in the last two conferences fell victim to reigning Reinforced Conference champion PetroGazz in its debut games. The Cool Smashers absorbed a five-set upset at the hands of the Angels in the Open Conference last year before a shocking straight sets defeat over PetroGazz in the import-laden tournament.

“So, we're really happy. You know, we're going to take that today but at the end of the day, at the end of every game, I think ang mas nilo-look forward namin is to correct all the mistakes we've done during the games,” said Valdez, who scored 13 points with 12 digs and seven excellent receptions. “And siyempre, nakita naman yung itsura ni Coach Tai (Bundit), hindi talaga pleasant.”

Valdez also admitted that the team is still far from its ideal battle-ready form but Creamline is slowly getting there with 15 more games to go in the preliminary round.

“Honestly, as a team, we're feeling heavy. We're preparing pa sa mga mas mabibigat pa na laban. So, kahit ganoon yung pakiramdam, kahit 15 more games, I'm confident that Coach Tai [Bundit] will bring us sa 100 percent namin. Hopefully, sa dulo. Mahaba pa so isa-isa muna,” she said.

Up next for the Cool Smashers is Motolite on Wednesday.
