Young Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala advanced into the 2nd Round of the Australian Open’s Junior Girls’ Singles round after defeating Israel’s Shavit Kimchi in three sets at the Court 12 in Melbourne Park, Sunday afternoon Manila time.
Eala came into the tournament seeded fourth, and started strong, blanking Kimchi, 6-0 in the opening set.
Kimchi would battle back to take the second set, 4-6.
Eala closed out the match with a 6-2 score in the final set to secure the win.
The 14-year old Eala, currently ranked ninth in the ITF Junior Rankings, now has a date with France’s Julie Belgraver in the second round of the tournament.
Eala is also set to see Junior Girls’ Doubles action alongside partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho of Indonesia. They face the tandem of Russia’s Elina Avanesyan and Ukraine’s Liubov Kostenko on Monday, January 27th.
