Filipina junior tennister Alex Eala has had a busy couple of days in the on-going Australian Open.
Following victories in the first and second round of the Junior Girls’ Singles tournament, the 14-year old Eala bowed out of the singles race after a 1-6, 3-6 loss to 16th-seeded Hong Yi Cody Wong of Hong Kong in the 3rd Round.
Eala won’t be heading home just yet however, as she still has a chance to claim Australian Open glory alongside Junior Girls’ Doubles partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho of Indonesia.
The fourth-seeded tandem of Eala and Nugroho opened the doubles tournament with a two-set win over the tandem of Russia’s Elina Avanesyan and Ukraine’s Liubov Kostenko.
The pair followed that up with another two-setter against the tandem of Julie Belgraver of the Netherlands and Pia Lovric of Slovenia to enter the quarterfinals.
There, Eala and Nugroho bested the French tandem of Aubane Droguet and Selena Janicijevic to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Standing in between the Eala-Nugroho tandem and a trip to the finals is the top-seeded pairing of Latvia’s Kamilla Bartone and Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic.
